What is Forest School?
Everything you need to know...
What is Forest School and why is it Important for Children’s Development?
Forest School is a child-led, nature-based approach to learning that encourages exploration, creativity, and personal growth through regular outdoor sessions in a woodland or natural environment. Rooted in Scandinavian educational philosophy and now growing rapidly across the UK, Forest School offers children the chance to develop confidence, independence, and emotional wellbeing through hands-on experiences in the outdoors.

The Forest School Association (FSA) describes Forest School as “an inspirational process that offers children, young people and adults regular opportunities to achieve and develop confidence and self-esteem through hands-on learning experiences in a woodland or natural environment.”

Research shows that children who attend Forest School often experience improved concentration, behaviour, and motivation when they return to the classroom. Being immersed in nature helps reduce stress and anxiety, while promoting resilience and a greater sense of self-worth.

The positive effects of time spent outdoors are increasingly recognised in the wake of rising concerns about children’s mental health. Forest School provides safe, nurturing environments where children can express themselves freely, take supported risks, and learn in ways that suit their individual needs - all while building a meaningful connection with nature.

A quote that captures the essence of Forest School beautifully is:
“The best classroom and the richest cupboard is roofed only by the sky.”
- Margaret McMillan -
Forest School isn’t just about education - it’s about nurturing the whole child and helping them to thrive, both in school and in life.
